Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 where he enjoyed betting on various card games when he was young. He found himself getting very aggressive in these card games as he was playing his father. After finishing secondary school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a bit and relocated to New York City to play some formidable chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial two years were difficult as he played many hours and lose most times. He made some additional money by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he could improve his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He made an effort to acquire more sleep and focus more on the game.

The definite advancement in his skills began when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest players would frequently play against each other. Howard was able to access some of the foremost minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would tweak his logical thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategic ideas to the game of NL texas hold’em.

Howard also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper choice. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to move out to Las Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. She is one of the strongest female players the poker arena today. Howard headed to Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and competed in money games for the next decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, he made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
