by Carlos on August 25th, 2025
Phil Ivey has been referred to as the greatest poker competitor on the planet by quite a few of the top-ranked professionals. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to NJ before reaching the age of one. His grandfather introduced him to one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, he was addicted to poker and wanted to discover everything he possibly could about the game. Phil routinely would tell his elders that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He didn’t allow the negative comments from others kill his ambition of being one of the strongest poker competitors in the world.
He started playing seriously after getting a false ID by the name of Jerome. He honed his game at the casinos of Atlantic City. The initial few years for him were a learning experience and coming away with a win wasn’t a common outcome at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 WSOP when he achieved two final tables and came away with his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the final table he destroyed quite a few of the well known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil made a decision to take his skills to the next level and moved out west to Vegas. Phil continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Phil credits his success to hard work and an eternal passion for poker. He states that he is picking up skills every day and is quite abashed about his achievements. Phil admits to making errors in each session of poker and always aspires to get better.
Despite the fact that Ivey has come first in some big tournaments, he favors destroying money games on a normal basis.
